This is what the Indian Institute of Rural Management (IIRM) at Jaipur is preparing to do with earnestness. The institute, started by the Society for IIRM has been offering postgraduate diploma programmes in business management, with specialisation in rural marketing and development, finance, HRD and international business. All these educational pro¬grammes are intensive, high profile and career-oriented.
Besides winning accolades from the Indian media, the institute has also earned tremendous appreciation from national agencies, United Nations organisations, Indian companies and multinationals. IIRM is promoted by Cangans—a secular Christian family from south India, whose mission is creation, dissemination and extension of quality education. The Cangans are known for their commitment to promotion of Indian ethos and respect to all religions in an equal way. Since inception, IIRM has undertaken a wide spectrum of management research and consultancy projects for and on behalf of the Central and the state governments, corporate bodies and internation¬al bilateral agencies, such as UNICEF, UNFPA, World Health Organisation, World Bank, World Food programme, Oxfam America, NORAD, SIDA, etc.
IIRM has taken a lead role in developing the discipline of rural marketing, which is emerging as a corporate catchword. The campus witnesses several man¬agement and executive development programmes of IIRM throughout the year. Some of the prestigious management training programmes are attended by senior managers of blue chip companies, senior IAS officers, additional collectors, pro¬ject directors, principals of medical colleges, et al.
The students of the institute are also encouraged to participate in the research activities undertaken by the institute. These studies cover various rural develop¬ment sectors, such as education, health and nutrition, women and child development, watershed development, rural industries, as well as organisation and management of micro enterprises.

Healthcare and its management in India have come a long way since independence. The arrival of private healthcare providers around the country in the last one decade and the maturity of the pharmaceutical industry and its growing popularity and presence in the global arena have given new opportunities to the aspiring managers in the healthcare sector, who are products of reputed institutions like Indian Institute of Health Management Research (IIHMR).
Founded in 1984 in Jaipur, the IIHMR has made phenomenal contributions to both research and education in the area of management of health services, achieving a pride of place in health management, planning and research at the national and international level. The role of the institute is being increasingly realised and appreciated in developing health management as an important discipline, for improving the efficiency, effectiveness and quality of health care. The institute has consolidated its focus on research in health policy and programmes. IIHMR is an institution dedicated to improvement in standards of health through better management of health care and related programmes. The facilities at the institute are of international standards. The main building has an academic block, a computer centre, a library and documentation centre, a conference hall, an auditorium, an MDP centre, and lecture and seminar rooms.
The institute has a major role to play in capacity building and management skill development in the health sector through training and education. Dissemination of knowledge and training for the development of management skills is the focus of its activities. The institute offers one long-duration and several short-duration management development programmes with specific goals.

Management is such that the students spend broadly around one-third of the entire duration in doing basic courses, one-third duration in advanced/elective courses and balance one-third period with the projects.
The pedagogy of the programmes use various learning tools like case studies, role plays, live projects and management games to supplement the lecture method. To encourage high involvement of the students, the classroom sessions are highly interactive. The emphasis is on learning the applications of concepts rather than just a theoretical understanding. The pedagogy adopted, therefore, is consistent with the basic objective of shaping hard thinking, hard working, and hard analyzing managers who can apply their conceptual learning to real-life situations to be able to deliver results to the organisations where they choose to work.
