UBS, Punjab, is one of the schools of excellence to watch out for. Working within the constraints of a university system, UBS has attained a special place among business schools in the country. UBS is a part of the Punjab University, which has been accorded a five-star status by NAAC National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC). The school was established as a joint collaboration between Harvard Business School and IIM-Ahmedabad.
The batch of 2004-06 is the 37th of the programme. Being a part of the university system, UBS benefits from a multi-disciplinary approach, with management being complemented by commerce, humanities and social sciences. The regular exchange of guest speakers with other departments of the university ensures a holistic approach to the discipline among the students.
UBS boasts of arguably the best and the most well-equipped campuses in the country. Its students have access to the best facilities. Health care (which is avail¬able free of cost to UBS students), along with market and banking facilities, is available in the campus itself. UBS has two good quality hostels - one each for boys and girls. All these facilities have been provided to the students at sub¬sidised rates. Guru Nanak Institute of Management & Technology (GNIMT) is affiliated to Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar, and was established in 1997 by Guru Nanak Education Trust (Gujarkhan), Ludhiana, founded in 1919.
The trust forayed into the realms of computer and management education for providing a stimulating environment for developing impressionable young minds. The institute is located in Model Town in the heart of Ludhiana city. Commonly known as the Manchester of India, Ludhiana is also the industrial capital of small-scale industry and provides a multitude of opportunities for professionals.
The institute offers full time regular MBA (120 seats), MCA (60 seats), M.Sc. (IT) (40 seats), BBA (120 seats) and BCA (120 seats). It has special orientation in HRM and marketing programmes too. The gender-ratio of students is 58.5 (females): 41.5 (males). Average age of the students is 20 years.
As many as 80 per cent, of the students of the final semester have found placement, while the rest did not opt for the facility, as they joined their parents’ businesses. Admissions to MBA classes are carried through Management Entrance Test (MET), conducted by one of the agencies of Punjab Government. As much as 33 per cent seats are kept as management quota, which can be filled either directly or with candidates with ranks in MET/MAT.
