Differentiating among peers is a major challenge for b-schools in this highly competitive and growth-oriented phase of progress in the country. Among the many quality institutions, IIMM stands out as one that has strategically blended military style discipline with that of a careful grooming of students, with strong corporate inputs by the best practitioners in the industry. Despite not having a modern owned infrastructure and working out of a primary school compound in Pune, the school has proved its mettle by becoming one of the best known schools in the country, providing top of the line managers for the industry.

This has been made possible by the rare insight and vision of its founder - a former soldier who has been conferred the title of a full colonel for the first time in his civilian life, owing to his contribution towards providing management education to the armed forces personnel. Prof Balasubramaniam, the founder of the Balaji Society, which started IIMM, is a well known personality in the educational circles of Pune. Known for his military style discipline, he has shaped the school and its students in the strict military-like training method, bringing the best among them. In the end, the students leave satisfied that they have been trained well for the gruesome corporate world.

By the academic session of 2006, the college would have shifted to one of the largest and most modern infrastructure built at the cost of Rs45 crore in a 50-acre plot, defying the conventional logic of moving up step by step by taking one big leap. The institute believes in empowering the students and address them as ’student managers’ from day one in the campus. An institute where the male and female student ratio is almost even, the institute is run mostly by a student council, who follow the practices of a gurukulam and stand out as students most admired by the industry. Placements have been good and growing and the institute has been able to attract the best crop of corporates to its campus, which usually visit the best schools such as IIMs and XLRI.
