The institute was established in 1981 as part of Somiya Vidyavihar Trust with a vision to provide state of the art education steeped in Indian values to all citizens at affordable cost. Since that year, over 5000 students have passed from the institute and are working in senior positions in over 200 large Indian and Multinational organizations, speaking volumes about the way the vision was realized by the institution.

The institute today has earned a legitimate pride of place among national management institutions and it runs a plethora of courses touching upon every need of the student and the industry for management education. The institute is housed in a 70 acre campus in central suburbs of Mumbai, which once again sets it apart from most other top management institutes operating from the city, as the sheer size of the campus provides the right atmosphere for all round development.

The institute offers PhD programme in management affiliated to the University of Mumbai and SNDT university (for women candidates only) post graduate diploma in business administration and a masters in management studies. Besides these flagship offerings, the institute has a range of part time programmes for working executives.

The institute has a strong faculty contingent of 35 with impeccable academic records and they bring not only rich intellectual capital but also a good industry network enabling the institute to offer top of the line management development programmes and industry consultancy projects. The institute attracts more than 100 companies every year a bulk of whom have been visiting the institute almost every year since inception. The institute has ample infrastructure in terms of class rooms and a fully computerised library with over 24,000 books , CD ROMs and cassettes covering all areas of management and almost 100 international and Indian journals, periodicals, and business publications.
