Sectoral management schools are few and far between and among these IIFM has a pride of place of being one of the pioneers in this rare but relevant field of providing managers to manage the environmental aspects of the country, chiefly from the perspectives of preserving our green cover.
The education in this institute, therefore is a blend of practical aspects coupled with advanced knowledge of management so that the manageVs would turn out to both professionally skilled and competent but also sensitive to the needs of the society and its preservation. The institute strives to meet the information and research needs of Indian forestry and forest related industries through its library and action research/consultancy services. The institute has grown as an educa¬tional, training-cum-research organization and is gradually acquiring international acceptance.
The institute’s two year post graduate diploma in forestry management course was launched in July 1988 and the programme is now well recognized all over the country. Since 1994 the institute offers an one year post, masters course in natural resource management with an objective of improving the skills of resource managers, practicing professional and others involved in resource use and manage¬ment. This course is first of its land in Asia, It has also been accorded recognition by Association of Indian Universities equivalent to a M Phil degree offered by Indian universities.
IIFM is also actively engaged at global level participating in activities hosted by similar organizations elsewhere or inviting participation from other organizations in international symposia, bringing together a congregation of leaders like ITTO, FAO, UNDP, USFS etc., The institute’s campus has a computer centre connected over local area network and has a state of the art geographic information system (GIS). Its library has over 26000 books on forestry and ecology, environmental sciences, behavioural sciences, financial management, marketing and such other.
The institute is looking to the future with firm leadership with the importance of environmental management growing. The institute is fast acquiring competence in integrated management of environment and forestry through national and international collaborations.
