The institute is a good example of a turnaround of a rare kind from being an institution which had lost its relevance after being in existence for over three decades to become one which could take the business school community of peers head on thanks to the leadership change effected merely a year earlier. Headed by a professional of a rare calibre, Prof. Biswajeet Pattanayak with a track record of building institutions and wresting the best from the faculty and students, the 1MB had a remarkable about face to become an institution of national relevance. The change followed the takeover of the institution by another institution, also run with agility and rare leadership, by Sourya Pattnaik, a young entrepreneur in education enterprises who runs Rourkela Institution of Management Studies (RIMS).
The meticulour turnaround and the expansion of the institute from a 60-seat institution for over three decades to a 120 seats one and subsequent addition of a series of courses including a part-time executive MBA programme and a post graduate programme in insurance, coupled with the expansion of the faculty strength with quality faculty, has galvanized the students of IMB. The turnaround itself has become a case study in action in any business school in the country and a living lesson for the students of IMB, once again a rare experience not available even to the best of the management schools around the country.
The experience of IMB also proves that leadership often makes all the difference, a lesson which is extremely useful to the prospective business leaders who are set to come out of this school. The school is well equipped with the most modern ambience complete with residential learning facility. The academic wing consists of fully air-conditioned lecture halls and syndicate rooms in the ground floor, an auditorium with a seating capacity of 250 students in the first floor for holding seminars, conferences, symposia and workshops - a regular routine feature at IMB. Every class room having LCD, Audio Visual & Intranet facilities. Pattanayak’s vision is to build his institute as a world class b-school rivaling any of the top schools of the country.
